TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- A Terre Haute man said an unknown Good Samaritan probably saved his life Wednesday afternoon during an apartment building fire on Terre Haute's east side.

Standing outside the smoldering apartment house that had been his home, Jeff Sarabia said someone knocked on his doors and windows to wake him and alert him his apartment building was on fire. Sarabia then grabbed what he could and fled the home as a fire alarm began to sound inside the home, he said.

"All I know is when I came out, half the house was burning," said Sarabia, who works a third shift and was "sound asleep" when his Home Avenue apartment house caught fire about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, said Terre Haute Fire Chief Jeff Fisher, who was on the scene with other firefighters.

There were three apartment units inside the two-story home, which is just north of Wabash Avenue.

No one except Sarabia was at home when the blaze started, Fisher said.
