A Dallas Fire Rescue firefighter who was injured in an explosion more than two weeks ago was released from the hospital Friday, but officials say she has a long recovery ahead.
Fire Rescue Officer Pauline Perez was released from Parkland Memorial Hospital's burn unit Friday to cheers from several of her colleagues and family members. She shared a hug with her captain, who also suffered serious injuries in the incident.
Fire officials told WFAA.com that Perez and two other firefighters who remain in the burn center are improving, but the "journey is not over."
Perez, along with Capt. Christopher Gadomski, Engineer Ronald Hall, and Fire Rescue Officer Andrew Curtis - all from Station 25 - were injured in the terrifying Sept. 29 blast at the Highland Hills Apartments where they were called out for a reported gas leak.
While they were investigating the leak, an explosion ignited a fire in the two-story building, causing a partial collapse and leaving the four firefighters and four citizens injured.
Perez, who joined the fire department in July 2019, suffered burns to her arms, head, face and legs.
Gadomski and Hall remain in the burn unit for treatment of various injuries. Curtis was treated for a foot injury and released on the day of the explosion.
