Phoenix Fire Department Assistant Chief Mike Duran III will fill the role as fire chief after Chief Kara Kalkbrenner retires next month.

Duran, a second generation firefighter, has spent over 27 years within the organization and is known for being a leader on Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) AZ Task Force-1 where he has deployed to multiple natural disasters.

“As the Fire Chief, I will prioritize innovative opportunities to improve the safety and services of our system," Duran said in a statement. “I am committed to creating a positive and equitable environment while promoting the development and sustainability of our organization."

Chief Duran is leading the implementation of the city's $15 million Community Assistant Program, which will help improve crisis response for behavioral and mental health calls, according to a Facebook post by Phoenix Fire Department.

“Mike is a visionary strategist who I'm confident will help move our organization forward," said City Manager Jeff Barton. “His strong communication skills and meaningful experience developing and maintaining relationships within the city, community, and business partners will be invaluable as he takes on the role of Chief."

Phoenix Fire Chief Kara Kalkbrenner will be retiring at the end of February.
