Witnesses said he lost control of the bicycle and fell underneath Engine 62.

An 18-year-old bicyclist was killed Monday night when he was run over by the rear wheels of a Winter Park fire truck, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Cullen Mackenzie Detamore of Winter Park was killed at 5:45 p.m. on Greenwich Avenue, just west of Lakemont Avenue. He was pronounced dead in the emergency room of Winter Park Memorial Hospital, which is across the street.

The baby-blue racing bicycle and the truck were southbound on Lakemont when the truck turned right on Greenwich because it was planning to stop and pick up a patient at the hospital, said highway-patrol Cpl. Kris Neutzling.

The racing bicycle, which was closest to the curb, had no brakes, so Detamore sped up and also turned to try to avoid a collision, Neutzling said. Witnesses said he lost control of the bicycle and fell underneath the massive Engine 62, where he was run over by the rear wheels, she said.

The bicycle ended up on the grass next to the sidewalk and was not damaged.

The driver of the truck, Ronald Ryan, 51, was not hurt.

Lakemont Avenue was closed until about 9:15 p.m. a block north and south of Greenwich Avenue.

According to Detamore's Facebook page -- which features a picture of him riding away from the camera on what looks like the same bicycle -- he worked at Lakeside Behavioral Healthcare, studied at Valencia Community College and originally was from Oakland, Calif. He liked skateboarding and is captured in a YouTube video warming up last year at Midtown Skate Park in east Orange County.

A friend said Detamore is survived by a toddler son.
