METHUEN, Mass. -- Three firefighters were shaken up when the steering on their truck failed and it crashed into a utility pole on Arlington Street.

Fire Chief Steven Buote said the crew doing inspections about 9:40 a.m. Tuesday at the time of the accident.

"They were driving uphill on Arlington Street traveling below the posted speed limit and the truck started veering to the right," Buote said. "He tried to steer to the left, but the truck was not responding."

Buote said the truck jumped the curb and struck the utility pole, snapping it like a twig.

"A piece of the steering linkage fell out. The part just broke," Buote said.

The 1999 truck had recently received an inspection sticker, he said.

Firefighter James Scott was driving the truck at the time.

Buote said Scott had some shoulder pain, probably from the seatbelt, and was taken to Holy Family Hospital to get checked out.

All three firefighters are back at work, he said.

Buote said the front bumper of the truck would be replaced, and the truck checked for additional damage before it is returned to service.
