A rescue squad truck began to roll after the operator exited the vehicle, running over and killing a victim at a crash scene in Knox County.

Nov. 9—A Tennessee rescue truck rolled over and killed a person while crews were responding to a crash, police said.

On Nov. 7, the victim was sitting on the side of Northshore Drive in Knox County after the initial crash, witnesses told officials, according to a report from the Knox County Sheriff's Office. The rescue truck arrived on the scene, and firefighters got out to "help with the extraction of the crash."

The truck then rolled forward and crushed the person sitting on the side of the road, the sheriff's office said.

When an officer arrived on the scene around 1:25 a.m., the victim was lying down in the grass and being treated by paramedics, the sheriff's office said. The person later died at a hospital.

The driver of the rescue truck said he had put it in neutral and "activated the parking break" before getting out and putting on his equipment, according to the sheriff's office. He said when the truck started moving forward, he couldn't get to the cab in time to gain control of it.

The truck was taken to the sheriff's office lot and will be inspected by Tennessee Highway Patrol, the report said.

No other information about the incident, including the victim's identity, was released as of Nov. 9.

Knox County is in eastern Tennessee, about 180 miles from Nashville.
