BROCKTON, MA—Four people were injured when a car and ambulance carrying a patient collided about a half-mile from the destination hospital, officials said.
Police and firefighters responded to a crash involving an ambulance operated by Brewster Ambulance, the city's emergency ambulance service provider, at 660 Oak St. at about 7:10 p.m. Sunday.
The ambulance — CA8 — reported the crash to the Brockton Fire Department dispatch and requested another ambulance for the patient it had been bringing to the hospital.
The ambulance was on its way to Good Samaritan Medical Center in the city with a victim injured in a crash that occurred about 15 minutes earlier on North Montello Street when the collision occurred.
"The investigating officer discovered that the driver of a Subaru pulled out of the Madrid Square Apartments to make a left on Oak Street and was hit by the ambulance heading westbound," said Brockton police spokesperson Darren Duarte. "The 27-year-old Waltham woman claimed she didn't see the emergency vehicle, which had its siren and lights flashing."
Brewster sent additional ambulances to the scene and brought three victims — the initial patient from the first crash, the driver of the Subaru and a female paramedic who was in the ambulance — to Good Samaritan Medical Center. Police say the male paramedic driving the ambulance went to the hospital on his own to be evaluated.
Everyone injured in the crash suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The driver of the Subaru Impreza sedan, who wasn't identified by police, will be cited for failure to yield the right of way, obstructing an emergency vehicle and unsafe operation of a motor vehicle.
