NC Tanker on Traffic Detail Totaled by Tractor-Trailer
A pumper-tanker from Arlington Fire and Rescue was totaled in a crash on Interstate 77 in West Yadkin Monday afternoon.
The apparatus was on traffic control duty at the scene of an earlier accident at the request of the West Yadkin Volunteer Fire Department when it was struck by a tractor-trailer.
According to the Elkin Tribune, West Yadkin had been dispatched to a crash on I-77. Once on scene, the first due unit canceled other responders, but it then subsequently requested Arlington to assist with traffic per Highway Patrol.
Setting up a half-mile from the scene, Arlington Unit 1605 was directing traffic to merge into one lane when it was struck from behind and to the left by the semi.
Arlington’s engineer, who had been in the vehicle, was treated at the scene and transported to an area hospital. The tractor-trailer driver refused treatment. Arlington’s pumper-tanker was destroyed.
Due to crash debris and the ongoing investigation, northbound I-77 was completely closed for several hours after the incident.
