Detroit Fire Truck Breaks Down Headed to Medical Call

July 26, 2023
Firefighters recently sounded an alarm about the worthiness of the fleet.

The issue with Detroit fire apparatus continues.

A reserve engine was headed to an emergency medical call Tuesday when it broke down, WDIV reported.

Frustrated firefighters told reporters that someone had called the department and reported that a person was “lying down” and “not moving at all.” But, the initial firefighters dispatched didn't make it because the engine developed a mechanical issue.

Fire department officials said in a statement: "Within an hour or so, Squad 4 was provided another engine as a replacement."

Last week, firefighters voiced concern about the worthiness of the fleet.

They pointed out that Ladder 23 had a tire come off. And, in February, the same thing happened on an engine.

“They’re like, ‘Hey we’re getting it fixed, it’ll get fixed.’ You know, ‘that can’t happen, that shouldn’t have happened,’ blah, blah blah. It’s the same rhetoric,” Detroit Fire Fighters Association President Tom Gehart said
