An aerial truck was destroyed Sunday as Canadian firefighters battled a wind-driven blaze at a townhouse development that was under construction.
When the wind changed directions, and blew fire toward them, firefighters were unable to move the truck as the riggers had been set, Vaughan Fire Deputy Chief Grant Moffatt told CTV reporters.
"Unfortunately, it's a total loss," he said adding that the rig cost about $1 million.
Crews called for additional alarms shortly after they came into the area after 4 a.m.
Moffatt said the blaze spread quickly to several unoccupied residences nearby. About 35 unoccupied townhomes in various stages of construction caught fire.
Propane cylinders caused a number of explosions.
