For the 39th year, Firehouse shares and compares statistics about company and department levels, funding, staffing and pay for the career fire service. A total of 209 fire departments took part in this year’s survey, representing 44 states, the District of Columbia and 3 Canadian provinces. The departments represented in this latest survey protect 80,956,168 people, and they have budgets totaling more than $17 billion. They provide the services with 3,375 engine companies, 1,266 ladder companies, 1,730 ambulances and numerous specialized units. They responded to nearly 1.5 million fire calls, nearly 9.5 million EMS calls and approximately 12.5 million total calls in 2019.
This year, the COVID-19 crisis had many fire departments too busy handling the pandemic to respond to the survey. We sincerely understand and hope that those fire departments return to the Run Survey next year. To those departments that were able to respond, our sincere thanks. Best healthy wishes to all.
