What You Can Do to Help CA Firefighters

Aug. 3, 2018
A fund has been set up to help several firefighters who have lost their homes while battling the massive Carr Fire raging across Shasta County.

The massive Carr Fire raging across Shasta County these past two weeks has taken a heavy toll with two firefighters losing their lives to the blaze and several others losing their homes as they continue working day and night.

As of Friday morning, the fire is 39 percent contained after consuming roughly 132,000 acres of land and destroying thousands of structures, including over 1,000 homes. The blaze is now the sixth-most destructive in California history.

Among the homes that have been destroyed are several belonging to firefighters who are still working to contain the fire, and the Shasta County Burn & Benevolent Fund has been set up to help those firefighters and their families. As of Friday morning, $8,500 had been raised toward a goal of $100,000.

According to information provided to Firehouse.com with the help of Cal Fire Capt. Brandon Lanning, who set up the fund, at least 11 active firefighters have lost their homes since the Carr Fire began on July 23.

We are withholding their names at this time out of respect for their privacy, but the affected firefighters come from several agencies:

  • Three members of Cal Fire's Shasta-Trinity Unit.
  • One firefighter with Cal Fire's Tehama-Glenn Unit.
  • Four volunteer firefighters with the Shasta County Fire Department.
  • Three firefighters with the Redding Fire Department.

In addition, four former firefighters have also lost their homestwo who retired from the Cal Fire Shasta-Trinity Unit and two retired Redding firefighters.
