The Chicago Fire Department has honored one of its fallen heroes who died earlier this year by placing his badge on its Wall of the Fallen.
Rescue diver Juan Bucio, a 15-year veteran of the department, died on Memorial Day while searching for a man who had fallen into the Chicago River while boating. The Cook County Medical Examiner determined that the 46-year-old died of a rare heart condition called lymphocytic myocarditis that can cause heart failure.
A ceremony attended by department personnel and Bucio's family was held Tuesday morning at the Robert J. Quinn Fire Academy, where the firefighter's badge was placed on the department's Wall of the Fallen. Bucio's sons Jacob and Joshua unveiled his badge on the wall.
Following the ceremony, the group moved on to the CFD's Fallen Firefighter and Paramedic Memorial Park on the Lake Michigan shoreline to dedicate and install a brick in Bucio's memory.
"Juan Bucio, you will never be forgotten," the department said in a tweet. "The City and the Chicago Fire Department are better because of your service."
