A fire protection district in the northwest Chicago suburbs stands to benefit after village trustees turned down a sizable donation.
The Northwest Herald reports that the Cary Fire Protection District will receive a donation of $35,000 from an anonymous couple after trustees had to turn down an even larger donation to the village of $60,000 because the benefactors wouldn't reveal their identities.
It's unclear why the village board was split on insisting to know who the donation was coming from.
Instead of agreeing to reveal their names while maintaining their anonymous philanthropy, the couple chose to give money to the village's firefighters.
“If somebody wants to donate money for the benefit of the community, why wouldn’t we accept it?” Cary Fire Chief Jeffrey Macko told the Herald, adding that he plans to purchase a new defibrillator with the money.
Mark Guerra, a member of the fire district's board of trustees, called the gift generous.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you,” he said.
