OH Fire Department Creates Apprenticeship Program

July 2, 2019
Participants in the new program will work up to 24 hours at the Troy Fire Department while taking courses related to the fire service.

Finding enough firefighters and paramedics is a nationwide problem.

Troy has designed an apprenticeship program with the goal to learn skills of the fire service and develop a passion to help others.

The program allows the students to work about 20 to 24 hours a week at the Troy Fire Stations while progressing in courses during their related instruction time.

“This is the first day on the job for the first two apprentices. This fall both will be enrolled in classes at Edison State Community College in Piqua working for a degree in the fire science,” said Troy Fire Department Chief Matt Simmons. “The completion of the program will give them a definite advantage when they take they civil service exam to become firefighters and EMTs.”
