No Raises for CT Firefighters Because of Pandemic

Dec. 5, 2020
Danbury firefighters won't see a wage increase this fiscal year unless the city finances improve, but they are protected from layoffs or furloughs during this time, according to a new contract.

DANBURY, CT—City firefighters will not get a salary increase this fiscal year under the latest union contract due to the fiscal challenges from the coronavirus pandemic.

The firefighters will not see a wage increase this fiscal year unless the city's finances improve and are protected from layoffs or furloughs during this time, under the contract that City Council approved this week. The terms are similar to the recent contract for the Danbury Municipal Employees Association.

Firefighters will receive a 1.5 percent pay raise effective July 1, 2021, a 2.5 percent raise the following fiscal year and a 3 percent raise the year after that.

Under the contract, firefighters will continue to operate under 24-hour shifts.
