The Laredo Fire Department is warning the public of a scam claiming to be raising money for the family of Capt. David Segura after he died of COVID-19.

Jan. 29—The Laredo Fire Department is warning the public of an alleged scam claiming to be raising money for the family of a recently deceased firefighter.

Laredo Fire Capt. Erik Segura passed away due to COVID-19 this week. The Fire Department said Thursday that people had been calling Laredoans and going door to door to solicit donations for Segura's family.

"We would like to inform the community that the Laredo Fire Department does not and has never solicited donations for such causes," wrote Ricardo Oliva, public information officer for the department. "Please be aware of this scam."

The Segura family has not requested donations for assistance, according to Oliva.

The Fire Department asks that if contacted or approached by someone asking for money for this cause, to ask for their identification, how the contributions will be used, and to verify the solicitation with the Fire Department.

They also ask that anyone who has already been contacted by the alleged scammers to called the Laredo Police Department.
