A Dallas firefighter was arrested after claiming he and his family were suffering from COVID-19. An investigation into the incident into the situation determined that he was likely at a Texas resort.

William Carter was arrested Friday and charged with felony theft after collecting more than $12,000 from the city's payroll after telling his supervisors that he tested positive for COVID-19, and followed by a family member.

Carter, 38, told his boss that he tested positive March 24 and a week later reported that his daughter tested positive, according to an affidavit obtained by WFAA.com.

Dallas Fire employees were given paid time off if they tested positive during the pandemic and the benefit was extended if family members also received positive test results.

A supervisor asked him to turn in a doctor's note, or the test results, but he failed to submit any paperwork.

When Dallas officials looked into the case, his bank records were subpoenaed and it appeared that was a resort and waterpark during the time he was said to be sick with COVID.

According to the affidavit, officials asked Carter why he said he was sick and he answered, “Greed, I guess.”
