The Sullivan County District Attourny announced a grand jury has indicted an arson suspect in the line-of-duty death of Forestburgh’s Assistant Fire Chief William "Billy" Steinberg.
The grand jury indicted Mohammed Islam, 33, of New York City for murder and fourth-degree arson. Both charges are felonies, Recordonline reported.
Chief Steinberg collapse at the scene of a dwelling fire in the town on Thompson on Jan. 15, 2021, and was taken to a local hospital where he died.
In court documents, Islam is accused of using paper and wood to start a fire in a dresser drawer in a house.
Islam is also accused of setting two other fires in the town of Thompson on Jan. 10 and Jan. 13 according to the indictment.
By indicting Islam for felony murder, Sullivan County District Attorney Meagan Galligan said the grand jury was accusing him of bearing criminal responsibility for Steinberg's death, Recordonline reported.
Islam is currently held in the Sullivan County Jail, his case with be scheduled for arraignment soon.
