Agreement Reached in PA Firefighters Residency Battle

May 10, 2022
Members of the Pittsburgh Fire Department have reached an agreement with the city to end the residency requirement.

Pittsburgh firefighters and the city have reached a settlement that will end the residency requirement for current and potential applicants for the job of firefighter.

The city was prepared to go to court after firefighters won their arbitration case against the city months ago. The union said they have negotiated a settlement with the city and will withdraw its appeal to Common Pleas Court, WTAE reported.

Union officials said the settlement allows current firefighters to live outside of the city within 60 minutes of the City County Building. In addition, the settlement broadens the pool of applicants for future employment.

Mayor Ed Gainey's office said in a written statement, "We believe that our city and our neighborhoods can best be served when those of us who serve the city live here. Pittsburgh is a beautiful world-class city, and it is our hope that our firefighters will continue to choose to live here."
