Dec. 12, 2022
Former CAL FIRE Officer Mark Lawson resigned after less than a week after he was named chief of Sparks Fire Department.

A former CAL FIRE officer, who resigned after serving as a fire chief of a Nevada department, has been charged with felony drug possession involving steroids.

A criminal complaint filed last week by the Nevada Attorney General's office accuses former Sparks Fire Chief Mark Lawson and former NV Correctional Officer Lance Forrester, MyNews4 reported.

In August 2021 Lawson knowingly had .894 grams of Modafinil. Days after, Forrester unlawfully had approximately 45.19 grams of anabolic steroids and/or Testosterone. Authorities also outlined two other felony offenses for both men that involved possession with intent to sell, according to court documents.

One of the original charges included a gang enhancement which was a mistake. There is no gang enhancement on any of the charges, according to the Attorney General's Office.

Neither Lawson nor Forrester were arrested. They were issued a summons to appear in court.

Lawson resigned less than a week after being named Sparks fire chief. He was a former assistant chief/division chief of operations for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CALFIRE) Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit.

He was chosen from among six finalists who were part of a national process that involved the search services of Ralph Andersen & Associates of Rocklin, California.
