Sara A. Jahnke Gets Excellence in Leadership Award at IFSTA Conference
The International Fire Service Journal of Leadership and Management (IFSJLM), is pleased to announce that Dr. Sara A. Jahnke received the Dr. John Granito Award for Excellence in Fire Leadership and Management Research this summer in Tulsa, OK.
Dr. Jahnke presented the keynote address, “Health, Wellness, and Readiness in the Fire Service,” as part of the Research Symposium sponsored by Fire Protection Publications immediately prior to the IFSTA Validation Conference. The Granito Award is presented annually to an individual who has significantly advanced the fire leadership and management literature through their research efforts.
The award honors the many contributions and achievements of Dr. John Granito, Professor Emeritus and Retired Vice President for Public Service and External Affairs at the State University of New York at Binghamton, to the scholarly study of fire leadership.
Dr. Jahnke is a Principal Investigator in The Institute for Biobehavioral Health Research and Director of the Center for Fire, Rescue & EMS Research at National Development and Research Institutes, Inc. She completed her doctorate in Psychology with a Health Emphasis at the University of Missouri – Kansas City and the American Heart Associations’ Fellowship on the Epidemiology and Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease. Dr. Jahnke has served as the Principal Investigator of several large-scale studies of the health and readiness of the U.S. Fire Service with funding from the American Heart Association, the Assistance to Firefighters Grants through FEMA, and from the National Institutes of Health. Currently she is involved with several studies including an evaluation of the National Fallen Firefighters’ Foundation’s Stress First Aid intervention, an evaluation of The First Twenty online wellness program, and a study of the health women firefighters. She works closely with several fire service organizations as a scientific consultant and subject matter expert. Dr. Jahnke’s dedication to improving the health of firefighters is influenced by her father, Bill Jahnke, Chief (retired) of the Overland Park Fire Department in Kansas.
Dr. Jahnke is a prolific scholar. She is the principal investigator or co-investigator of grants and contracts totaling more than 16 million dollars. She is author or co-author of one book, 80 peer reviewed publications and book chapters; 46 peer reviewed presentations; and 20 peer reviewed abstracts. She serves on the Editorial Board of IFSJLM and is a co-author of four articles appearing in the IFSJLM.
