Prince George's County, MD, Fire Chief Sued over Transfers

July 1, 2024
Fire Chief Tiffany Green said the measure was necessary due to a shortage of fire and EMS personnel.

The cities of Greenbelt, College Park and Berwyn Heights as well as a resident filed a lawsuit late last week seeking an injunction to stop the transfers of career fire and EMS personnel.

Despite the measure, crews were re-assigned as of Sunday.

Chief Tiffany Green ordered the transfers of 55 career firefighters who staffed stations in  Brentwood, Greenbelt, Berwyn Heights and Bowie, WTOP reported.

The move came as the county has about 250 vacanies in the fire and EMS ranks.

“This isn’t the first time that we’ve had to redeploy our staffing, obviously, to make sure that we can cover our entire county. How we dispatch our calls now, it’s based on GPS. The most available unit is going to respond and what our job is each and every day … is to monitor our system … and to move up resources to cover the entire county. So, we believe that that’s what we’re going to be able to do," Green said.

Firefighters are worried about response times when the crews are relocated to other stations.
