Beloved Trumpet Back in FDNY Captain's Hands, Thanks to Pawn Shop Owner

Nov. 22, 2024
FDNY Capt. Anthony Holz was elated to be reunited with the instrument he played at funerals and Sept. 11 events.

It was a joyful reunion that veteran FDNY fire captain dreamed about, but didn't think would happen.

Capt. Anthony Holz was heartbroken last week when his beloved trumpet was stolen from his vehicle while he was on duty.

A pawn shop owner, who had seen a news story on abc7 about the stolen instrument, recognized it when a couple came in the sell it.

He called the police after they left with $125.

If there is a tune that can capture Holz's gratitude right now it is the Beatles' 'In My Life.'

It wasn't just a trumpet. It belonged to his late music teacher who encouraged him to play. And, that's just what he did -- for funerals, Sept. 11 events and other gatherings.

NYPD Detective Angel Cruz answered the call from shop owner.

"I then sent him (Holz) a picture of the trumpet and he did say 'that's it.' And - huge smile on his face, which also brought a huge smile on my face," he said.

The smiles were those of relief and of gratitude - for everyone instrumental in this reunion.
