Fire departments in Delaware and Maryland have revoked memberships of firefighters arrested for a hate crime.
Jay Droney, 27, of Millville, and Jordan Hastings, 23, of Delmar, are accused of chasing a Millville, DE firefighter around the station with a noose, WBOC reported.
Droney also continued to make racist comments to the victim after the incident.
Millville fire officers notified Delaware State Police about the incident.
In a statement, Millville officials wrote: "We understand that incidents of racial harassment not only harm the individuals directly involved but also deeply affect our entire community," the Fire Company said. "Such behavior is unacceptable and goes against our core values of honor, respect, valor and inclusion. We are committed to standing together in solidarity against hatred and discrimination, ensuring that all members feel valued and safe within our organization."
The two are charged with a hate crime, conspiracy and harassment.
Droney joined the La Plata Fire Company in Maryland on April 7 while the investigation was ongoing. As soon as officers learned of the arrest Tuesday, they yanked his membership.
“The La Plata Volunteer Fire Department takes all allegations of this nature with the utmost seriousness. We do not condone any form of hate, harassment, or behavior that is contrary to the values of public service. Our organization holds its members to the highest ethical and professional standards and remains committed to providing the best emergency services to the citizens of Charles County," said La Plata Fire Department President Travis Yates.
