Fire Damages South Florida Mall

PEMBROKE LAKES MALL --  Fire broke out at the Journey's Shoe Store in the Pembroke Lakes Mall Sunday night, causing heavy smoke and water damage to the mall's midsection, investigators said. The fire was reported around 6:15 p.m. -- 15 minutes after the mall had closed.   According to witnesses, the store was closed and the lights were out, but heavy smoke from inside was pouring into the mall. But the sprinkler system kept the flames under control until firefighters arrived.

Fire broke out at the Journey's Shoe Store in the Pembroke Lakes Mall Sunday night, causing heavy smoke and water damage to the mall's midsection, investigators said.

The fire was reported around 6:15 p.m. -- 15 minutes after the mall had closed.

According to witnesses, the store was closed and the lights were out, but heavy smoke from inside was pouring into the mall. But the sprinkler system kept the flames under control until firefighters arrived.

The mall was closed, but there were still some shoppers and employees inside. However, everyone was evacuated safely and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

The mall was expected to open on Monday, mall security told Local 10.
