MIAMI TWP., Ohio --

Miami Township police and fire were called to the 2000 block of Dayton Cincinnati Pike Monday night where they found roughly 80 railroad ties on fire.

The tracks were near the intersection of Farmington and Chautauqua Roads, on the edge of Miami Township and Miamisburg, police said, and the fire was no accident.

According to Maj. John DiPietro, of Miami Township police, the railroad ties were torched, which caused the reroute or halting of several trains when the tracks were shut down and nearly $30,000 in damage.

Roughly $10,000 in damage was done to a pile of rubber pads as well, police said, and this was where they believe the fire might have started.

Fire officials on scene said the fire was suspicious because of the cool weather, and the lack of natural ignition points.

Police officials said they have not made any arrests, and do not have any suspects, but whoever did this could face several charges including arson and tampering with railroad property.

DiPietro said they are working hand in hand with railroad police from Norfolk Southern to find the people who started the blaze. If anyone has any information regarding this incident, they should call 434-TIPS.
