April 01--Boston Fire Department investigators were still waiting yesterday to speak with a badly burned man to find out how he ended up in the Muddy River, and what he knows about a brush fire that firefighters were dousing when they found him Saturday night in the Fens.
BFD spokeswoman Steve MacDonald said late yesterday investigators have been unable to talk to the man because of his condition.
"He was transported to the hospital in serious condition," MacDonald said. "We don't know what role if any he had in the fire."
MacDonald said the fire got going next to the river at about 6 p.m.
"It's an area where we have several brush fires a year. It's adjacent to both a walking and a jogging path. It could be as simple as someone disposing of a cigarette," he said. "There are reeds there 7 feet tall and they're very dry. As the firefighters were extinguishing the brush fire they saw a man in the middle of the Muddy River."
Two firefighters donned protective water suits to wade in and pull him out, MacDonald said.
