A witnesses video captured the driver of a gasoline tanker escaping as flames engulfed his truck in Union on Saturday.
A 24-year-old man, who drove in front of the tanker and caused the crash that also involved a tractor-trailer, died in the fiery crash on Route 78, the Star-Ledger reported.
N.J. State Police Sgt. Gregory Williams said tanker, which was hauling 9,000 gallons of fuel, mounted the divider wall before it caught fire.
"I saw it in the distance and I didn’t think anything of it, but when I got closer it was surreal," Joe DeGioia told the newspaper. "I started taking video and you can hear two or three explosions and then I saw the man crawl out of the windshield of the truck. After that I stopped recording."
The driver of the tanker was listed in critical condition. The driver of the tractor-trailer suffered minor injuries.
