The early morning fire in East Orange quickly spread to nearby homes.

Five people are dead after an early morning fire swept through several homes in East Orange.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office told WABC that the victims range from six weeks to 78 years old.

The house fire on North 17th Street was reported about 6 a.m. Officials said winds fanned the flames, which spread to two other homes.

"I was nervous because it was really close, coming in my kitchen, I could smell it, that's how close it was. On the third floor, you could see fire busting out of the windows, debris everywhere flying," said neighbor Chante Williams.

The blaze was declared under control at 9:30 a.m.
