Three Orange County Sheriff's kicked in a window and rescued the man officials say set the fire.

An Orange County man is in jail after allegedly setting fire to a house in Christmas where his mother lives on early New Year's Eve, according to an Orange County Sheriff's Office arrest affidavit.

Hubert Ray, 53, is charged with arson to a structure believed to be occupied and violation of a domestic injunction. He is being held on $5,000 bond.

Ray, the affidavit said, showed up at the Juniper Street house where his mother, Bertha Rogers, lives around 1 a.m. Wednesday. He told her and another man in the house, Andrew Efstathion, to leave, along with their dogs.

The affidavit said Rogers smelled alcohol on Ray's breath.

"Hubert told Bertha and Andrew that he loved them and he would not come out of this alive," the report said.

Three deputies responding to the call – Frank Bonetti, William Fowler and Sgt. Mike Deeb – said they could smell gasoline and saw Ray setting fire to the house.

After kicking out a window in the rear of the house, the trio found the residence "was quickly engulfed in flames and we had to drag Hubert out," Bonetti wrote.

Ray was not hurt, the affidavit said.
