WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- A two-alarm fire in a northwest D.C. row house has left two people dead and five others injured on Wednesday.
The flames broke out in a row home in the 1600 block of Riggs Place around 2:30 Wednesday morning, according to Tim Wilson, spokesman for DC Fire and EMS. Once firefighters arrived on scene they found flames coming from the three-story structure, and the response quickly escalated to a second alarm. The fire took over half an hour to extinguish.
According to sources at the scene, two adults were found unconscious inside the home and were pronounced dead. Wilson confirms two other adults were transported to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Three firefighters also suffered minor injuries.
Earlier Wednesday morning 16th Street was blocked between R and T Streets. That area has since reopened, leaving only the 1600 block of Riggs Place still shut down to traffic while fire investigators and ATF officials work to determine the cause of the blaze.
