Squatters told firefighters that they fled the building after the fire broke out.

A Las Vegas fire official said squatters ignited a fire at vacant apartment building Sunday night.

Firefighters from Clark County and Las Vegas responded to 201 W. St. Louis Ave at 8:15 p.m. and found heavy fire engulfing a second floor unit. The two-story, 12-unit building was boarded up.

Firefighters had the fire under control in just a few minutes, according to Las Vegas Fire Spokesman Tim Szymanski.

The fire was contained to one unit and damaged the roof and Szymanski estimated the damage to be around $40,000.

Szymanski said squatters told crews that they fled the building after the fire broke out.
