TX Department Starts Fire Safety Program as Fire Deaths Soar
The San Antonio Fire Department launched a fire safety program called SCAN after fire related deaths in 2022 have surpassed the total deaths from 2021.
This week the City of San Antonio suffered a fire related death during a house fire on Monday morning. This is the eleventh death in the first four months of 2022 according to city officials, surpassing last year’s total of ten fire-related deaths.
Monday morning’s fire broke out in a vacant building the 4300 block of South Flores Street. Firefighters battled heavy flames and smoke in the back of a building and found a man dead on the floor next to a wheelchair, according to a report by KSAT News 12.
To help combat the increase in fatalities, fire officials reminded the public of their news safety campaign called SCAN.
SCAN stands for smoke detectors, clearing the path for escape, action plan and neighbors. Fire officials told KSAT News 12, it’s especially important to check and connect with older relatives vulnerable to fire dangers.
Fire officials emphasized, it’s important to check in on neighbors and family members to ensure minimal clutter and make sure smoke detectors are in working order.
