Seven Hurt, Houses, Vehicles Damaged in Fireworks Mishap in Griffith, IN

Jun. 30—GRIFFITH — A fireworks malfunction injured seven people attending a pre-holiday fireworks display Saturday night outside a residence in Griffith, according to Griffith Police.

Police did not specify the nature of malfunction. But the fireworks seem to have triggered a number of simultaneous explosions that injured those watching the private fireworks show and damaged nearby property.

Altogether, seven people were injured, and four houses and ten vehicles were damaged by the blasts that occurred around 9:30 p.m. Saturday in the 900 block of N. Arbogast St., police said.

The names and conditions of the victims were not immediately provided by police.

Griffith police officers were assisted at the scene by the town's fire department; Highland, Merrillville, Schererville and Munster Police; the Schererville Fire Department; and Superior EMS.
