Jul. 13—Five people died in a Houma-area fire Saturday morning, according to the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office.

Flames erupted inside of a Bayou Blue home at 313 Louise Lane at about 3:45 a.m., killing five people inside. When firefighters arrived, the roof was collapsing, but one victim able to escape was sent to the hospital. Their condition was stable Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

Louisiana Fire Marshal Brian Adams said from the scene of the blaze Saturday afternoon that his office is investigating the cause of the fire which wasn't immediately clear.

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre joined Adams at the scene and said that the sheriff's office is standing by the fire marshal's office through its investigation.

"We're here to support them all the way through their investigation which will probably take several days if not longer to go through all the evidence and to come to some conclusions," Webre said.

Webre offered condolences to the loved ones of those killed in the blaze, though their identities weren't immediately released to the public.
