An FDNY EMS lieutenant suffered a medical emergency Thursday while responding to a call concerning an emergency medical technician who had a stroke while driving a department ambulance.
EMT Liam Glinane had been transporting the vehicle to another FDNY location when he suffered the stroke at about 1 p.m. along the Brooklyn-Queens-Expressway, the New York Daily News reports. No one was with Glinane at the time, and he managed to roll to a stop off the roadway.
Lt. Raymond Wang, who was on a ride-along with a doctor from New York City's Elmhurst Hospital, was dispatched to help Glinane. Once at the scene, Wang suffered an aortic aneurysm, and the hospital doctor treated both men until more help arrived.
Both firefighters were listed in critical condition. Glinane, a 28-year FDNY veteran, was first taken to Mount Sinai Queens Hospital before eventually being transported to Mount Sinai Manhattan. "We’re not believers in coincidence, except for today," FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said at press conference with Mayor Bill de Blasio. "And it is an extremely tragic coincidence. Thankfully both of these men were able to be transported and are still alive. It’s somewhat amazing considering the serious nature of these conditions."
