Virginia firefighters and EMS workers were kicked and pushed away by "an unruly crowd" while trying to treat an injured motorcyclist Monday, according to department officials.
Virginia Beach crews responded to an accident just before 9 p.m., a department report stated, according to WAVY-TV. When they arrived, a large crowd began surrounding them.
<As firefighters and EMS workers were taking care of the motorcyclist, members of the crowd "pushed and kicked" them, the department report states, according to WAVY. When the ambulance left the crash scene, some of the crowd started to "jump on, kick and hit multiple EMS vehicles causing damage,"
According to the report, some people followed the ambulance, and the injured motorist died on the way to the hospital.
“The emergency room was placed on a temporary lockdown as a proactive measure to ensure everyone’s safety” Lauren Patton, a hospital spokesperson, told WAVY via email
No Virginia Beach firefighters or EMS workers were injured in the incident. It's not known why the crowd interfered with the first responders.
