Aug. 17, 2023
The medic suffered life-threatening injuries while trying to stop the man from 'exiting' the rig on I-95.

A patient who jumped out of a moving ambulance is dead and a paramedic who tried to stop him suffered life-threatening injuries.

The 70-year-old man 'exited' the ambulance on I-95 in Port St. Lucie and was run over by multiple vehicles. He was pronounced dead at the scene, WPTV reported.

The 29-year-old paramedic who tried to stop him also fell onto the road and suffered serious injuries. He was taken to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The drivers of two vehicles -- a Kia and a tractor -- that hit the patient returned to the scene. However, others didn't, according to tcpalm.

The patient and the medic were from Jacksonville while the driver of the ambulance was a 38-year-old woman from Orange Park, Florida Highway Patrol officers said in a release.

There has been no information about where the ambulance is based or its agency.

Port St. Lucie fire officials said it was not from their department.
