Officials said eight farm workers were killed and several were critical after the bus left the Marion County highway and rolled over.

A bus crashed on a Florida highway Tuesday morning, resulting in 8 people being killed and 8 others being critically injured, according to the Ocala Star-Banner. which has a reporter and photographer on scene.

The crash occurred off West State Road 40 in Marion County and involved a bus carrying laborers to a farm, the Star-Banner reported.

“Officials on scene said the laborers worked for a private company and were being taken to a watermelon farm,” the Star-Banner’s report states. “There is no name on the side of the bus, and the owner of the private company was aboard the vehicle and had to be transported to a hospital after the crash.”

The newspaper reported that 53 people were on the bus at the time of the crash.

The newspaper also reported that the crash occurred after “a brown Ford Ranger was eastbound on the same road. A witness told troopers that for some reason the Ranger moved into the westbound lane and the vehicles collided.

The bus ran onto the south shoulder, struck a board fence and struck two trees. The bus then overturned, troopers said.”

The Star-Banner has live updates coming into its article this morning, which you can find here.
