The chase ended when the thief drove the Ashburnham ambulance back to the Gardner hospital.

A man who stole an ambulance from a Gardner hospital Wednesday evening is facing multiple charges.

Ashburnham EMS personnel intervened when a man, unrelated to their call, assaulted hospital staff and a civilian as he attempted to get into the emergency department, WCVB reported.

Police immediately started pursuing the ambulance as it traveled through Gardner and Hubbardston. It struck several vehicles during the chase, according to Ashburnham Interim Fire Chief Chris Conrad.

The pursuit ended where it started -- at the hospital -- when the ambulance hit a pole.

Harrison Barjolo, 21, of Spencer, was taken into custody without further incident.

Barjolo has been charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, operating to endanger, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, assault and battery on an elder, assault and battery on ambulance personnel, simple assault and battery and other motor vehicle charges.

No one was seriously injured in the incident. However, the ambulance sustained extensive damage, the chief said.
