A box truck crashed onto a Downtown Boston sidewalk into a building Tuesday afternoon, leaving at least two pedestrians in critical condition, police said.
Boston Police officers responded to the crash scene by the intersection of Washington and Kneeland streets, between Boston’s Chinatown and Theater District, around 12:45 p.m. after receiving a radio call for a crash involving pedestrians, according to Officer Mark Marron, a spokesperson for the department.
The truck appeared to have hit multiple light poles before striking a building and flipping on its driver’s side, wedged between a pole and the building’s facade.
As first responders reached the scene, it was unclear how many pedestrians had been wounded, but at least two were in critical condition, Marron said.
The truck involved belonged to the Penske rental company, whose records indicated that it was “out on rent to a commercial trucking company,” Alen Beljin, a Penske spokesperson, said in an email to MassLive.
“This is an ongoing situation that we’re monitoring closely,” he said. “Penske will be cooperating fully with authorities to support their investigation. Our thoughts are with those who have been injured in this unfortunate incident.”
The company had no further information about the crash.
Firefighters used extrication tools to remove the trapped driver from the cab of truck, said a spokesperson for the Boston Fire Department.
Malikah El-Bey-Brown was exiting a public bus on the way to a medical appointment when the crash occurred nearby. She said she thought the driver had been going a little fast, “but not enough to cause this wreckage.”
“A lot of people [were] yelling and screaming for help, to help the driver and the people that were walking on the sidewalk,” she said.
She also recalled hearing a loud bang as a large piece of metal fell.
