Established in 1882, the Charleston, SC, Fire Department has had a long and celebrated history as a department protecting one of our nation’s most historic cities. On June 18, 2007, nine Charleston firefighters were killed battling the Sofa Super Store fire, marking the largest loss of firefighters in a single incident since September 11, 2001. Firehouse Magazine covered the tragedy in the July 2007 issue. Following this devastating loss, a detailed investigative report was published with more than 250 recommendations for improvement. To the credit of the members of Charleston Fire Department, they have once again made history, rising from the ashes of tragedy to institute the required changes, ultimately becoming one of the nation’s most recognizable and accomplished fire departments. Today, as a nationally accredited and ISO Class 1 fire department, the Charleston Fire Department has reached new heights in their training and professional development, and it continues to pave the path of progress in honor of the Charleston 9.
