The death toll on 9/11 of the firefighters, officers and chiefs who died in the line of duty was the worst tragedy to strike the FDNY since the department was formed in 1865. There were many sons and brothers, fathers and sons, cousins, and other relations who died.
Many of the firefighters listed were promoted to the next highest rank posthumously. Their original rank remains with their photograph.
We also pay tribute to the 37 Port Authority police officers and 23 NYPD officers who died in the line of duty on that day.
