MILWAUKEE --
A Pewaukee man was arrested and is awaiting charges after being accused of running down a Milwaukee firefighter and fleeing the scene.
The firefighters were on a routine call. A two-car accident with no injuries had occurred, and firefighters were roping off the scene.
Then a man pulled up in a truck. When firefighters asked him to back up, the man ran his truck into one of the firefighters.
Lt. Chuck Stamschror of the Milwaukee Fire Department said it's something he'd never seen before.
"He just put it in gear, hit the driver, backed up, and when we thought he was going to get out of the car he put it in gear and took off again," Stamschror said.
The firefighters were startled, but they were able to give police a license plate number that they traced to a home in Pewaukee. The Waukesha Sheriff's Department arrested the 37-year-old suspect at his home without further incident.
The firefighter suffered a minor knee injury. He didn't want to be interviewed Friday, but he stated through the department that he's resting at home with his family and expects to be back to work next week.
The suspect has a prior conviction for misdemeanor battery in Milwaukee. The suspect is not being identified until charges are filed.
