Pennsylvania Teen Alerts Family to Fire

April 11, 2009

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Pa. --

A 14-year-old boy heard the smoke detectors in his home and helped his family escape an early-morning fire in Washington County.

"He's the man," Brian Hamilton said. "He come in, woke us up, rolled us out, got us out of harm's way. It could have been ugly."

The blaze at Brian and Sharon Hamilton's house on Barr Road in Nottingham Township broke out at about 3:30 a.m. Friday.

The Hamiltons' son, Devin, told WTAE Channel 4 Action News that he woke up and saw the flames spreading quickly.

"I look out the blinds and the whole thing's engulfed -- the top of my roof, engulfed," said Devin Hamilton.

The boy said he managed to get to his parents' room, where his mother was beginning to stir but his father was still fast asleep. He alerted them to the fire, then woke his brother and told him to get out.

One side of the house collapsed in the fire, forcing the family to stay with relatives in the area.

The state police fire marshal is investigating to determine the cause of the fire.
