A San Diego firefighter was hit by an engine on Sunday, Aug. 9, while on the scene of a traffic accident, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Firefighter Jonathan Bowens was hospitalized for several hours before heading back to work.
"It's just a little sore; it's not debilitating," he told the newspaper. "A little Alleve and ibuprofen and I'll be fine in a couple days."
While responding to the accident, Fire Engine 44 was parked at an angle to block two lanes on the right side of the freeway and protect the driver inside a sedan that had just rolled over, according to the report. Bowens, was among four firefighters who placed safety cones on the freeway to warn drivers.
Several minutes later, a Honda Accord rammed the left rear bumper of the engine, causing it to hit Bowens' shoulder, throwing him about 10 feet.
The 13-year veteran, who was hurt in his right shoulder and side, got back up and resumed putting out safety cones, but his superiors decided to send him to the hospital to be checked.
Before the crash, he signed up to work an extra shift. Instead of going home after being released from the hospital, he went back to work.
