MONROE, Wash. --

A 7-year-old boy and a woman were transported to a hospital after being swept down the Skykomish River east of Monroe, said Richelle Risdon of Monroe Fire District 3.

Bystanders ran to help the woman and her son when they were swept downstream at about 2 p.m. Monday. It's not clear if they were swimming or trying to cross the river.

Monroe firefighters said the woman was submerged for a time before rescuers were able to pull both people out of the swift current.

"They were working on her as they were bringing her up the boat ramp," said Craig Gallagher who saw firefighters return to a boat ramp with the woman.

The boy will be OK and the woman is in a more serious condition, said KIRO 7 reporter Graham Johnson.

Firefighters said the message here is to always be safe around rivers.
