MIAMI --

A teenager is credited with saving her younger brother's life after an early-morning fire ripped through their Miami home.

The fire broke out at the home at 1693 Northwest 55th Street around 4 a.m. Monday.

Firefighters said the mother left her 16-year-old and 11-year-old children home alone while she went to work.

The older child was awakened by the smell of smoke. She then woke up her younger brother and got them out of the home.

Investigators said the fire began in the utility room and severely damaged the home.

The homeowner told Local 10 they do not have a smoke detector.
