Firefighters battling a three-alarm fire in Beverly were ordered to scramble out of the burning apartment complex this afternoon as flames tore through the roof.
Firefighters were battling the fire for more than an hour, directing streams of water at the interior of the building in the upper floors.
No injuries have been reported in the blaze that touched off around 1 this afternoon in the six-family complex located in downtown Beverly on Cabot Street.
Fire and police did rush into the burning building early on to look for victims and came out with a pet cat, which they returned to the grateful owners on the sidewalk. The building was not fully involved at the time, witnesses said.
The Red Cross is at the scene of the fire.
Early reports of people trapped and hurt in the building proved false. Two ladder trucks are being used to attack the flames atop the building.
Smoke from this blaze can be seen for miles. The building is located near the commuter rail tracks, but no reports of any delays in train service.
